Damien Katz:
Static typing in OO languages isn’t the solution to software complexity, rather it’s an enabler of it. Static typing is like giving a drunk a bunch of breath mints and saying “Don’t drive drunk. But if you must, use these breath mints in case you get pulled over.”
I’m still trying to make sense of […]

Nimble, agile, less-mass businesses can quickly change their entire business model, product, feature set, and marketing message. They can make mistakes and fix them quickly. They can change their priorities, product mix, and focus. And, most importantly, they can change their minds. — Getting Real, 37Signals
The best advantage small organizations have over their larger counterparts […]

I’m with Cliff…
The Bipolar Lisp Programmer, an essay posted to comp.lang.lisp by Mark Tarver, brilliantly sums up many of my worst traits. Of course, I never realized quite how many BBMs there must be out there. If only one of us could work up the kind of sustained execution that would be required to organize […]

Jon Phillips has a great idea:
For anyone trying to offset your carbon footprint: Get a shovel, dig a hole, and bury yourself. I’ll take volunteers to do this first and I will document the whole process from start to near finish.
Plus, as noted by South Park, it has the added bonus of keeping you from […]

Now I can’t claim to know much about much, but John Resig’s port of Processing to 5,000 lines of javascript looks to me to be one of the most ridiculous, impressive feats I’ll ever witness. I don’t have the time to poke around with it yet, but from the demos, it looks like this could […]

Picking up on the Expelled Exposed meme…
According to Seth Finkelstein, I’m not a Googleterrorist:
I’d say this isn’t a “Google-bomb”, since the target site wants the high ranking itself. And Google’s algorithmic changes to defuse the bombs aren’t applicable here, since the words appear extensively on the site.

Bill Gates on free software…sorta:
“There’s free software and then there’s open source” he suggested, noting that Microsoft gives away its software in developing countries. With open source software, on the other hand, “there is this thing called the GPL, which we disagree with.”
Free Software advocates always seem to ascribe malicious intent Gate’s actions, but based […]

Mark Pligrim, translating Joel Spolsky’s truthiness…
Those documents are super confusing.
With a little truth of his own…
Hi, I’m Web Developer Barbie. Pull my string and I say, “Standards are tough! Let’s go shopping!”
Can someone explain to me why Mr. Joel on Software gets so much link-love?

Larry David on the “Sybillish personalities” Clinton’s broken out on the campaign trail.
I don’t want her talking to Putin, I don’t want her talking to Kim Jong Il, I don’t want her talking to my nephew. She needs a long rest. She needs to put on a sarong and some sun block and get away […]

I noticed a nice little humane cue on the humanized site recently. Next to the “POST A COMMENT” label, they’ve included a small, subtle reminder…
Please respect this public space
Now I’m not a fan of wasteful sign pollution, but if you’re in the habit of actually reading the comments (incredibly useful sometimes), this little cue might […]

I suppose this concept isn’t too dissimilar from your run-of-the-mill graffiti, but there’s something about its messaging that’s a whole lot more appealing to me. Hijacking traditional, necessarily negative messages, if for only a short while, to deliver something more positive strikes me as one of the highest forms of piracy (somewhere below this).
