Circular circuits as superstorage…

I just finished reading Hacking Matter by Wil McCarthy — interesting read, about quantum dots and their potential — but a passing reference to super conductors as batteries really knocked me on my ass.

I’ve read for years about the constant search for room temperature super conduction, but it always seemed like such a quaint advance. Great, so we won’t lose a tiny fraction of power when transmitting over long distances…

That other use never occurred to me: batteries. What an idea — you could pack about as much damn power as would be safe into a superconducting loop and bata-bing — you’ve got one big ass, perfectly efficient battery…

Who knows when we’ll get there, but if we do, the “hydrogen economy” becomes moot.
