Adobe AIR again…

Having decided to contribute more here, I’m already thinking I need a better application to pump out posts than this TinyMCE hack that sits inside Wordpress. I know there are some desktop apps out there that can handle this via XML-RPC — I’ll have to carve out some time for some research…

In the meantime, I figured I’d post my comment on this Kevin Dangoor ditty

Not to sound like a zealot here, but open source is an improper characterization. Just because the tools to make an AIR app are open doesn’t mean AIR apps are open. Flash is as closed as they come (and no, Adobe’s donation of spidermonkey doesn’t count), thus, any development investment in AIR is just as platform-risky as an investment in Silverlight.

I know, I know: I’m biased; I’m a free software guy. But still, I used to be a rabid Flash fan — it really is quite powerful, and I often find myself yearning for a FOSS alternative (not a clone: not gnash — clones make for moving targets). I just think it’s important to take stock of AIR’s proprietary limitations — especially when rolled into FOSS projects.

That said, perhaps I’d change my tune if someone would kick out a sweet AIR desktop rich text editor that’s fast, powerful and works with Wordpress…

Underneath this flabby exterior lies an enormous lack of character…
